Figure SSA-ind-080. Alexei Alexeev and the architectural elements of the Bharhut Stupa. Originally built in the Magadha Kingdom during the reign of Ashoka the Great (r. 268-232 BC) of the Maurya Dynasty (322-185 BC), this sacred structure was extensively modified and decorated by the following generations of rulers. Among the stupa's decorative artworks many were donated by the persons with the ophionymic identities: (1) bhikkhuni (nun) Naga; (2) bhikkhuni (nun) Nagadeva, the Chudathiklika; (3) bhikkhuni (nun) Nagila from Moragiri; (4) Nagasena, the Kodiyani (from Kodiya tribe), from Pataliputra; (5) Nagarakhita and his mother, the Kamuchuka; (6) bhikkhuni (nun) Pusadata, the Nagarika (inhabitant of Nagara).
