Figure SSA-ind-055. The meditating Buddha Shakyamuni holding his hands in dhyanamudra and sitting in padmasana (vajra-paryankasana?) on the lotus pedestal resting on the coiled body and under the protective canopy of the naga Muchalinda's cobra hood. This artwork is the reference to the post-bodhi (enlightenment) events, when unseasonal storm and cold downpour threatened the Buddha's solemn serenity and naga Muchalinda provided the much-needed natural protective shelter. |
