Figure SSA-ind-051. The episode from the Buddhacharita by Ashvaghosha (80-150 AD): The nimbate Buddha Shakyamuni blessing (?) the freshly converted anthropomorphic water-dwelling nagaraja Kala (Kalika) and his nagini queen consort Suvarnaprabhasa, both sporting the monocephalic cobra hoods, holding their hands in anjalimudra, and emerging in the general attitude of submission, respect and veneration from the waters of the vedika-enclosed sacred spring with a gargoyle emitting a stream of water at Uruvilva (Uruvela, Bodh Gaya, South Bihar); the Hercules-style divine serpent-tamer and future bodhisattva Vajrapani (Vajrasattva) holding the vajra; the chief Buddha's attendant, senior "archivist", crypto-feminist, and future arhat Ananda (the foremost in memory, the Guardian of the Dharma), or possibly (?), another serpent-tamer Mahakasyapa (the foremost in ascetic practice); other dignitaries standing beside and witnessing the event.
