| Figure EUR-vat-005. Large serpent (possibly Ladon, the iconographic reference to the Garden of the Hesperides and the Eleventh Labour of Heracles?), undulating behind Titan Atlas, holding up the sky (extreme west of the Oikoumene); Titan Prometheus bound to the column at the Rock of Caucasus and tormented by the eagle sent by the chief Olympian god Zeus (extreme east of the Oikoumene). Possible alternative interpretation: the punishments of Sisyphos and Tityos in the Tartarus (Underworld). |
