Alexei Alexeev and the east view of the Basilica Papale di San Pietro in Vaticano (Papal Basilica of Saint Peter in the Vatican), one of the most renowned works of Renaissance architecture and the largest church in the world. According to the tradition, this location is the burial site of Saint Peter, the chief Jesus's Apostle and also the first Bishop of Rome (Pope). Originally built in 326-360 AD, during the pontificate of Pope Sylvester I (p. 314-335 AD), the reign of the Roman Emperor Constantine the Great (r. 306-337 BC) and their immediate successors, this sacred structure was rebuilt, extensively modified and decorated by the following generations of pontiffs and rulers.
